Sierra Leone’s first ever medical insurance scheme will
commence operation in September, an official has disclosed.
Ishmail Kanu, Resident Actuary at the newly established Sierra
Leone Health Insurance Scheme, said eligible contributors will be required to
pay Le15 a month to qualify for a medical insurance that will cover about 35
diseases under the primary health care.
The Sierra Leone Health Insurance Scheme is the latest
intervention of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT). NASSIT
officials say the venture is geared towards complimenting government’s effort
to provide affordable healthcare for the people.
The Trust has also listed people in the exception category -
children below 12 years, people above 65 years, and inmates in correctional
centers, as well as extremely poor people. These people, said Mr Kanu, will not
be required to make the monthly contribution but will benefit from the scheme.
NASSIT recently met with managers and human resource
managers of institutions to introduce the scheme.
