A youth organization last week called
on the Sierra Leone government to investigate alcohol contents in local brews
which are blamed for the increasing high rate of crime in the country.
Alcohol manufacturers have been accused
of putting high alcohol contents in their brews against existing policies,
which buyers tend to prefer anyway. The problem is that the local brews, which
are overly cheap, are particularly popular among young people.
The Youth Empowerment and Development
Association Sierra Leone (YEDA – SL) said last week the actions of these
brewers was setting the country on the path to destruction and it called on the
government to act.
Indians dominate the liquor industry in
the country. And the leading ones among them are Shankadas, Kadco, and MR Distilleries.
Repeated calls by campaigners against
alcohol abuse for these powerful companies to be regulated have fallen on deaf
ears.
“We are becoming very much uneasy
referencing the fact that violence is becoming a norm in our society…” YEDA –
SL said in a statement, adding: “We are earnestly craving the indulgence of the
vibrant leadership of this country to send a halt and begin to investigate the
content of alcohol in products floating for a chicken change everywhere.”
